Amisfield Pinot Gris – A great Pinot Gris from the South Island of New Zealand

The grapes for the Amisfield Pinot Gris come from barren, stony lochar gravel soils on the upper terrace above the winery and shallow sandy loam soils in the plains below. After harvest, they were gently pressed and allowed to settle overnight before being racked into a combination of fermentation tanks. 25% of the wine was naturally fermented in large oak barrels. The wine was then aged for 4 months on a light, fluffy lees to add a textural element to the wine.

And this is how the Amisfield Pinot Gris tastes

The 2022 Amisfield Pinot Gris beguiles with a seductive aroma of fresh Nashi pears and slate-like minerality, accompanied by oriental spices. It is juicy and animating on the palate, very balanced and multi-faceted. A great white wine from New Zealand, full-bodied, with esprit and a long-lasting finish.

And the Amisfield Pinot Gris goes well with these dishes

The Amisfield Pinot Gris from Central Otago, New Zealand is a versatile food companion. Enjoy it with the following dishes:

Poultry: Dishes such as roast chicken, turkey or duck, especially when served with fruity or mildly flavoured sauces, go well with Pinot Gris.

Shellfish: dishes such as prawns, langoustines or lobster, especially in creamy or lightly spiced preparations, complement the often soft texture and rich flavour of Pinot Gris.

Cheese: Medium-strength cheeses such as Gouda, Munster or Emmental are great accompaniments for Pinot Gris.

Fruity and mild Asian dishes: Thai or Vietnamese dishes with a sweet and sour balance offer a nice contrast to Pinot Gris.

Smoked salmon or smoked fish: The often present flavours of stone fruits and the texture of Pinot Gris from New Zealand can complement the rich flavours of smoked fish.

Pasta with creamy sauces: These include dishes such as pasta Alfredo or pasta with a light lemon and cream sauce, which go well with the often full body and light sweetness of New Zealand Pinot Gris.

Root vegetables and autumnal dishes: dishes with sweet potatoes, pumpkin or carrots, served roasted or in a soup, are excellent accompaniments for Pinot Gris, as their sweet and earthy notes complement the fruitiness and softness of the wine.

Sushi and sashimi: The purity and freshness of sushi and sashimi can enhance the subtle fruit flavours and balance of Pinot Gris.

Apple-based desserts: Apple pie or apple tart, served with a not-too-sweet Pinot Gris, can provide a surprisingly fitting end to a meal.
