Mischa Estate Wines
Wellington – South Africa
Three generations quality wines and vines
The two brothers Andrew and Gary Barns look back on a history of more than forty years of their winegrowing business. Their grandfather bought the farm shortly after World War II and quickly established a reputation as a grape grower and grape producer. As a result, the estate grew to become the third-largest nursery and grape-growing operation in the Southern Hemisphere. And even today, Mischa Estate Wines supplies vines to South Africa’s leading wine farms. The name “Mischa”, by the way, comes from the grandmother’s former Russian dance partner, whose name was Mikael. About 17 years ago, Andrew and his family decided to use the extensive viticultural knowledge they had accumulated to make their own Mischa wines. They created a winery with a small and fine production of the highest quality handmade wines.
Nutrition Farming Pioneers
Meanwhile, Mischa Estate Wines is recognized as one of the best boutique wine producers in South Africa. The wines have already received several gold or double gold awards. And there have been top marks from wine critics such as Robert Parker and John Platter. From the jury of the Michelangelo International Wine Awards, Mischa received the trophy for the best Bordeaux blend in South Africa. All wines bear the signature of winemaker Andrew Barns. His farm was the first in South Africa to implement “nutrition farming” methods. This means that all steps, from grafting the vines and growing the grapes to producing and bottling the wines, take place on one property. The grape material for the award-winning wines comes from ancient soils in the Voorgroenberg region of Wellington.
