Vidal, a hardy hybrid grape, is grown primarily in Canada and the northeastern United States. It is best known as one of the ice wine grapes of Ontario, where it is grown on a significant scale. Vidal’s thick skin, resistance to cold, and high natural acidity make it a perfect candidate for the ice wine category. The grape variety is most commonly grown in the Great Lakes region. The Finger Lakes in New York State and the Niagara Peninsula in Ontario are the main growing areas, with the Midwest and Quebec also being important. Vidal can also yield dry table wines, but its best use is undoubtedly as a lush and intense ice wine. Floral and fruity aromas are characteristic of all Vidal wines and in ice wines the grape shows caramel aromas and notes of sweet apricots.
