Ribera del Duero is a wine region in north central Spain. It stretches along the Duero River. The region is known for producing full-bodied Spanish red wines. These are mainly made from the Tempranillo grape variety, known locally as Tinto Fino or Tinta del Pais.
The region is characterized by a harsh continental climate with hot summers and cold winters. The soils are mostly rocky, and rich in limestone and chalk. These factors contribute to the unique terroir of the region. Wines with intense aromas and flavors of dark fruits, leather, tobacco and spices are produced.
The region has a long winemaking tradition that dates back to Roman times. But it was not until the 1980s that the wines from Ribera del Duero gained international recognition. Today, the region has more than 270 wineries and more than 20,000 hectares of vineyards.
The wines of Ribera del Duero are divided into four categories according to their aging process: Roble, Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva. Roble wines are aged for a shorter period in small oak barrels, called barricas. Usually between six months and one year. Crianza wines are aged for at least two years, including at least one year in oak barrels. Reserva wines are aged for at least three years, including at least one year in barricas. Gran Reserva wines are aged for at least five years, of which at least two years in barrels.
The wines from Ribera del Duero are known for their high quality and complexity. They have earned a reputation as some of the best wines in Spain. They pair well with a variety of dishes, including roasted meats, stews and aged cheeses.
