A premium white grape variety from France, with a wide distribution in many wine-producing countries of the world. At its best, it combines the beguiling fragrance and rich aroma of Gewürztraminer with the acidity associated with Riesling. The grape variety has very good aging potential and develops rich, buttery characteristics.
In Germany Pinot Gris is known as Grauburgunder, Grauer Burgunder or as Ruländer (Baden), while in Italy it is called Pinot Grigio. It is common in Alsace as Tokay Pinot Gris, where it produces opulent, honeyed, dry white wines as well as excellent sweet late harvest wines. Pinot Gris is now grown with considerable success in the USA and New Zealand.
