Amisfield Pinot Noir – Central Otago Pinot Noir to kneel down to

Certified organic since 2021, the grapes for the Amisfield Pinot Noir come from the silty Waenga loam soils of the lower terraces near the winery. They were harvested by hand and then soaked at room temperature for four to five days before fermentation began. The particularly gentle handling of the mash during alcoholic fermentation helped to extract the delicate tannins from the skins and seeds. In some fermentation vats, around 15% whole grapes were also used. At the end of the fermentation process, the different batches of wine were repeatedly tasted in order to better assess the tannin development. The wine was then transferred to French oak barriques, where it was allowed to mature for 15 months.

And this is how the Amisfield Pinot Noir tastes

The 2021 Amisfield Pinot Noir exudes a wonderful aroma of black plums, star anise and spices that combine with classic dark fruits from Central Otago. Beautifully framed by a slightly earthy note and mineral hints, this wine is complemented by fine oak and fruity, supple tannins. Great concentration, complex flavour structure with a long-lasting finish. A very typical Pinot Noir full of character from the cool south of New Zealand.

2021 Amisfield Pinot Noir

And the Amisfield Pinot Noir goes well with these dishes

The Amisfield Pinot Noir from Central Otago, New Zealand, is characterised by its fruitiness as well as its spicy notes and earthy undertones. These characteristics and its gentle tannin structure and delicate acidity make this wine an ideal partner for a variety of dishes:

Meat dishes:

Lamb: Dishes such as lamb chops, slowly braised lamb or roast lamb with herbs go particularly well with Amisfield Pinot Noir, as the flavours of the wine harmonise well with the slightly spicy taste of the lamb.

Duck: Dishes such as duck breast with a fruit sauce (e.g. cherry or orange sauce) can complement the fruity notes of this New Zealand wine wonderfully.

Pork: Roast pork or pork tenderloin, perhaps prepared with a light mustard sauce or with apples, are excellent options that go well with the fruitiness and softness of this Pinot Noir from New Zealand.

Poultry:

Grilled chicken: A simply prepared chicken flavoured with thyme and rosemary can bring out the subtle spice notes in the wine.

Turkey: Especially in an autumnal preparation with mushrooms and herbs, this New Zealand red wine can complement the flavours well.

Seafood:

Roast salmon or tuna: these fattier fish can absorb the intensity of a Pinot Noir from New Zealand and offer a rich contrast to its tannic structure.

Vegetarian dishes:

Mushroom risotto or mushroom ragout: The earthy flavours of mushrooms are a classic pairing for Amisfield Pinot Noir, as they bring out its own earthy component.

Grilled vegetables: Especially vegetables such as aubergines, peppers and courgettes, which have richer flavours, can harmonise well with the structure and aromas of this Pinot Noir from Central Otago.

Cheese:

Hard and medium-aged cheeses: varieties such as Gruyère, Comté or medium-aged Cheddar can provide a nice complement to this red wine from New Zealand, emphasising the nuances of both.

These dishes emphasise the versatility of Amisfield Pinot Noir and show how well it can harmonise with both stronger and more delicate flavours. cheers!
