‘The Selector’ Shiraz – powerful Shiraz from the Barossa Valley

The ‘The Selector’ Shiraz from Lindsay Wine Estate is an opulent red wine from the Lindsay Collection ‘TLC’. Like all the wines in this limited series, it is adorned with a label based on a work by Australian artist Sir Lionel Lindsay. The graphic ‘The Selector’ was created by the painter and graphic artist in 1923. A block of land or a large ranch was named ‘Selection’. It was part of the government’s plan to develop the land. Those who had the money or could contribute their labour were given their ‘Selection’. The selector represents the man who looks over his piece of land that he has worked hard for. His faithful dog is with him as always. A home at last.

The grapes for this Shiraz come from the Barossa Valley, South Australia. With a rich history dating back to 1842, the Barossa is one of the oldest wine-growing regions in Australia. Originally founded by the British, the German influence came from Lutheran emigrants from Prussia. Today, there are six generations of winegrowing families and the region is home to Australia’s largest collection of old vines with many blocks of still productive vines dating back to the 1860s. The barren soils in the Barossa region are extremely variable and have all the important layers. They range from deep, siliceous sands to heavy black loam. Beneath these are well-drained red and red-brown clays and poorly drained yellow and grey subsoil loams.

The 2021 red wine vintage in the Barossa Valley proved to be a remarkable year, characterised by favourable growing conditions. The region experienced a mild winter and spring, which provided the vines with plenty of water. This gave the vines a balanced start to the growing season. The summer brought warm, sunny days, which allowed the red grapes to ripen slowly and develop an optimal flavour profile. The late harvest resulted in grapes with excellent phenolic ripeness and balanced acidity. The 2021 vintage shows depth, complexity and an exceptional structure with fine tannins and a long, impressive finish. Overall, the 2021 red wines from the Barossa Valley will be celebrated for their rich character and ageing potential.
