The great reward for great moments

Reminiscent of the large plants from the Medoc in Bordeaux. Fine, dense tannins give this wine great structure and long-term aging potential. Latin for “Great Rewards”, Magna Praemia is considered by wine connoisseurs to be one of new Zealand’s best wines and is a treasure in the wine cellar for the great moments and occasions in life.

The 2015 Magna Praemia is distilled from the following grape varieties: 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 3% Malbec and 3% Petit Verdot. The wine was aged for 10 months in oak barriques. 60% in French oak and 40% in American oak. The proportion of new barrique barrels was 40%. Before bottling, the wine was minimally filtered. Magna Praemia, like all Destiny Bay wines, is also sealed with natural cork.

And this is how the Magna Praemia from Destiny Bay Wines tastes

The large Magna Praemia of Destiny Bay is very lively, youthful and colorful in the glass. In the nose first an explosion of blackberries, blackcurrants and black cherries, accompanied by floral-herbaceous notes such as lavender and thyme. This is followed by characteristic musk aromas for the Cabernet Franc, followed by graphite and a hint of vanilla and caramel, which reflect the ageing in oak wood. On the palate extremely concentrated and close-meshed, with a lot of berry fruit and subtle hints of lacticritz and tobacco. The acidity is fresh and delicate, the tannin already looks amazingly matured, a very complex and rich wine, full of grace and with a remarkably long reverberation. The Magna Praemia will certainly unfold its true potential in the wine cellar for decades to come.

2015 Destiny Bay Magna Praemia

And that goes well with Destiny Bay Wines’ Magna Praemia

Destiny Bay’s Magna Praemia is a great partner for cured meats, especially pies and terrines, cold roast beef or wild pies. Simple grilled meat, such as steak, grilled and fried lamb, roast beef, veal and game. It is also excellent with steak pies, beef sliced, ox cheeks and other stews cooked in red wine. It also adapts very well to sausages with French fries and beans or lentil dishes. And it also cuts a fine figure with hard cheeses such as Comté, Gruyère, Allgäu mountain cheese or soft cheeses with white mould, such as a Brie de Meaux or a Camembert.

"Very intense, rich and complex cabernet sauvignon-dominant red with dark-fleshed plum, blackcurrant, cassis, new leather, anise and a strong influence of spicy oak. A wine that’s clearly been built to last, although I find it easier to read than the mid-range Mystae. A true thoroughbred." -Bob Campbell MW, 98/100 points
