A typical cool climate Pinot Noir

The grape material for Whitehaven Marlborough Pinot Noir comes from Marlborough’s Southern Valley’s (52 percent) and Awatere Valley (48 percent). The grapes for this wine were hand-picked in the cool autumn mornings. They were then destemmed in the winery and placed in various stainless steel fermentation tanks. A small portion of the grapes, about 5-20 percent, were left whole. After a cold maceration of about 3-6 days, alcoholic fermentation was initiated. Wild indigenous yeasts were used in this process. The wine remained on the skins for a total of 16-21 days before being pressed. Aging took place in various French oak barriques. The proportion of new wood was about 25 percent. The wine then remained in these barrels for 10-11 months. The wine was then stored for another 2-3 months on the fine lees in stainless steel tanks. Finally, on May 27, 2021, this Pinot Noir was bottled.

And this is how the Whitehaven Marlborough Pinot Noir tastes

Whitehaven Marlborough Pinot Noir beguiles the nose with a delicate aroma of fully ripe red cherries, blackberries and plums, with hints of spicy notes reminiscent of plums, thyme, cedar, anise and gingerbread. Cherry aromatics and cake spice continue impressively on the palate. The texture of the red wine is supple and the tannin soft and polished. The acidity is delicate and very well integrated. A very elegant, balanced and full-bodied wine overall, with a long finish and good potential for development.

And the Whitehaven Marlborough Pinot Noir goes well with it

Try the Whitehaven Marlborough Pinot Noir with poultry and game birds. Roast goose, duck or game are its domain. However, thanks to its powerful structure, it also goes very well with roast lamb or fillet of beef. However, a piece of matured hard cheese is also enough to get into rapture.

"Beautifully fruited and perfumed on the nose showing dark plum, sweet cherry, floral, clove and subtle mushroom aromas, leading to a juicy palate offering bright fruit flavours combined with silken texture and polished tannins. Supple and elegant with a lengthy velvety finish." -Sam Kim, Wine Orbit NZ, 5 Stars

"Bright, ruby-black with good transparency, slightly lighter edged. The nose is elegant and softly full, penetrating aromas of dark herb, red liquorice, entwined with baking spices, underlying black cherries, blackberries and a hint of pepper. Medium-bodied, aromas of blackberries and cherries possess a fresh core, unfolding thyme, rosemary and liquorice, along with cinnamon and nutmeg. The mouthfeel is silky, possesses powdery tannin extraction, leaves an elegant palate, linger with warming spices on the finish. Lacy acidity lengthens with freshness and vitality. This is a silky and balanced Pinot Noir with black fruit and herb details and a smooth appeal. Match with smoked duck and pork rillette over the next 5+ years." -Candice Chow, Raymond Chan Wine Reviews, 5 Stars

"Youthful bouquet with a core of red berry fruits and raspberry, some mineral and French oak spice scents of vanilla and cedar. Youthful, vibrant, fresh and varietal. On the palate - equally fruity at the core with flavours that reflect the bouquet, plus plum and a wet rocky mineral quality. Crunchy and refreshing acid line along with ripe tannins add structure and texture leading to a lovely mouthfeel combination of wood, fruit and a sense of place and time. Well made and ready to drink from mid 2022 through 2028." -Cameron Douglas, MS, 93/100 points, Excellent
