A wonderful single vineyard Chardonnay

The Felton Road winery manages four plots of land totaling 34 hectares in the Bannockburn sub-region in Central Otago. The now legendary Block 6 was planted in 1993 and is located on a northern slope of the vineyard “The Elms”. Its higher position between 282-300 meters and its steeper slope ideally captures the sun. However, the vines are also exposed to stronger winds, which is a challenge in some years.

The harvest in block 6 took place from 31 March to 7 April. The grapes for Felton Road’s Chardonnay Block 6 were pressed whole. The must was allowed to settle overnight in the stainless steel tank for clarification and was then led by gravity into the underground barrel cellar. The fermentation took place there with natural, wild yeasts in used French oak barriques. New barriques were not used. A long and complete malolactic fermentation also took place in these barrels, which significantly softened the acidity of this wonderful New Zealand wine. After 17 months of barrel maturation, of which 11 months on the fine yeast, this Chardonnay was finally removed and bottled without prior fining and filtration.

What does Felton Road’s Chardonnay Block 6 taste like?

From the glass Chardonnay Block 6 of Felton Road flows an irresistible scent of stone fruit, citrus fruit and white flowers, enveloped by mineral notes. On the palate, the summer fruit continues refined, the full-bodied Chardonnay shows a lot of extract and a creamy texture, the acidity is very delicate and mouth-watering, the finish long and carried by fine fruit and subtle saltiness. A characterful and elegant wine from New Zealand’s cold south.
