The benchmark Syrah from the Gimblett Gravels

In 1993, Trinity Hill, as one of the pioneers, began planting wine on the barren gimblett gravel plot in the former riverbed of the Ngaruroro River. A complete success, as it turned out. Today, these 800 hectares are the most sought-after vineyards in Hawke’s Bay. In 2002, Trinity was able to produce the Top Premium Syrah “Homage” for the first time, which was created in memory of John Hancock’s late friend, Top Winemaker Gerard Jaboulet: He had sent 3 Syrah clones from the famous Hermitage Hill on the Northern Rhone, from which the Homage Syrah was obtained. It is produced only in the best years.
The Syrah grapes were all harvested by hand from different blocks within the Gimblett Gravels, gently destemmed and then fermented individually. The must was pumped daily over the grape skins, or the skins were submerged by hand to achieve an optimal extraction of color and tannin. A plot was fermented as whole grapes with the stems and some Viognier shells to obtain special aroma and structure. The total skin contact with the wine is between 16 and 35 days, so that, depending on the wine, the tannin could be optimally integrated and the wine stabilized. This was followed by a 12 to 15 month maturation of the individual wines in 35% new French barriques.

And this is how the Trinity Hill Homage tastes

The Trinity Hill Homage Syrah is characterized by purity, complexity and finesse. These characteristics are the flagship of this wine. A beguiling scent of fresh strawberries and raspberries, sweet spices, black liquorice, crushed pebbles and cedar wood results in an exquisite, multi-layered taste on the palate with great precision and depth. Wonderfully fine tannins and lively acidity support the grandiose texture and the exceptionally long finish. A graceful and balanced wine that will continue to blossom over time and gain in complexity. He has a development potential of 20 years.

And the Trinity Hill Homage Syrah fits in with this

The Trinity Hill Homage Syrah is a wonderful accompaniment to braised lamb with beans or beef dishes, such as tender ox cheeks. It is also highly recommended with well-hung venison or hard cheese made from sheep’s milk. We recommend decanting it before serving.
