Fruity Shiraz from one of the best plots of the Northern Barossa Valley

The plot “Block 8” is located at the highest point of the northern corner of the Resurrection vineyard, where the soils become flat and rocky. Due to these conditions, the grapes ripen early, which leads to low alcohol contents in the finished wine. In this section, so-called Maywald Shiraz grapes were planted, cuttings of the oldest Shiraz vines in the Barossa Valley and possibly even the whole world. After harvesting, the Block 8 grapes were fermented relatively cool in an open fermentation vat for 10 days with the skins. In this case, the cool fermentation accentuates the delicate floral aromas of this particular block. In order to better emphasize the fruit notes, used, no new, French barriques and hogheads were used for the 10-month ripening. A malolactic secondary fermentation also took place in these barrels. With the moderate alcohol, the cool fermentation and the use of used oak barrels, this Block 8 Shiraz is particularly fresh, fruity and delicate and thus represents an interesting change from the classic Barossa Valley Shirazes. This Shiraz was made vegan.

And this is how St. John’s Road Shiraz Block 8 2016 tastes

On the nose, St. John’s Road Block 8 Shiraz is delicate and aromatic, with aromas of dark cherry, blackberry, raspberry, a hint of spice and some chocolate. Very complex and exciting. On the palate it is very lively, with the taste of concentrated red fruit, dried herbs and venison. A very structured, interesting wine with grippy tannins, a not too high alcohol content and a dry, long finish.

And the St. John’s Road Shiraz Block 8 2016 fits in with this

We really liked the St. John’s Road Block 8 Shiraz with a lamb ragout with olive sauce and pepper vegetables. We can also highly recommend it for braised game dishes with cranberries.
